Costs for Patients with Statutory Health Insurance
For patients with statutory health insurance, a distinction must be made between children (under 18) and adults. For children and adolescents, the costs of orthodontic consultation and treatment planning are generally covered by the statutory health insurance.
Depending on the patient’s age, dental development, and the severity of the tooth and jaw misalignment, there may be entitlement to orthodontic treatment under public insurance.
In such cases, the health insurance provider covers 80% of the treatment costs approved by the orthodontist. The remaining 20% is initially billed to the primary insured person, but this amount can be reimbursed by the insurance provider upon successful completion of the treatment.
Additionally, the orthodontist is legally required to inform patients fully about services that are not covered by statutory insurance. These may include professional dental cleanings, the application of protective sealants before fitting fixed braces, digital imaging of the teeth, or placement of a fixed retainer after the active treatment phase.
These optional services are tailored individually and can amount to up to €3,500. You may be able to claim these costs through your supplementary dental or orthodontic insurance.
Costs for Privately Insured Patients
Following your orthodontic consultation at our practice, we will discuss whether treatment is medically indicated. Once the diagnostic records have been evaluated, you will receive a detailed treatment plan and cost estimate, which you should submit to your private insurance provider and, if applicable, to your aid agency (Beihilfe) for review.
We recommend this approach, as private insurance policies now vary widely in their coverage and conditions. This ensures that you are fully informed about the portion of costs your insurer will reimburse. If you have any questions or require assistance with the process, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
Treatment Costs for Self-Paying Patients
For adults, statutory health insurance does not cover any costs related to aesthetic orthodontic treatment. If you wish to pursue treatment, we will provide you—just as we would for privately insured patients—with a detailed cost estimate. Depending on the type of treatment, its duration, and the level of complexity, total costs typically range between €4,000 and €9,000.
For children and adolescents with statutory insurance, if the treatment is considered purely cosmetic and not medically necessary by the insurer, a cost estimate must be prepared. Costs will vary depending on the treatment method, duration, and complexity. Due to significant individual differences during developmental years, it is not possible to give general cost examples.
Whether adult or under 18, there are many supplementary insurance options that offer specific coverage for orthodontic treatment. We recommend reviewing these options to help offset potential out-of-pocket costs.
